Bump & Grind Hike
If you see people in workout clothes heading up a hill at sunrise, they’re probably doing the Bump and Grind. It’s Palm Desert’s favorite workout hike, and the views over the valley are worth every step.
The trail climbs steadily up a wide, rocky path, then loops back down. Plan on about 3 miles and roughly 800 to 1,000 feet of climbing. Most people finish in an hour and a half to two hours.
Good to know
- Drive from our stays: about 10 minutes
- Trailhead: use the official lot on Painters Path, behind Target
- Go early. Start at sunrise, especially from May through September.
- Bring more water than you think, plus sunscreen and a hat
- Dogs: leave them home. Dogs aren’t allowed on this trail because it’s bighorn sheep country.
- The upper section is closed to protect the sheep, so stick to the marked loop.
Our tip: keep an eye on the ridges. Lucky hikers spot bighorn sheep up there.
